Should I Care What Other People Think of Me?

something I've been thinking about
Why do I care what people think of me?
I don't know.
Have I always?
Probably.
The thing is, I'm a Capricorn. And in my opinion, we are chronically misunderstood.
It could be the lack of filter. Things tend to tumble out of my mouth in roughly the same condition they entered my brain: clear, direct, and completely unadorned. The words are usually halfway across the room before I've had a chance to clean them up and slap a bow on them. And somehow, what comes out almost always sounds exponentially worse than what I actually felt or intended.
So...well, no wonder I'm misunderstood.
And maybe, to some people, that's a character flaw. Maybe my particular brand of directness is a personality trait they simply don't jive with.
Fair.
But here's where I get stuck:
Should I care?
Sometimes I think I should.
Not in the everyone has to like me kind of way. I don't need or want that. But when I know someone has walked away with an impression of me that doesn't feel true, something in me wants to clear it up.
I want to explain what I meant.
Add the context.
Soften the wording.
Make sure they understand that that's not how I meant it - I am not a complete asshole.
Basically, I want to clean up a conversation that's already over.
And I've been thinking about whether that's actually my responsibility or not.
Because there's a difference between taking responsibility for how I affect people and taking responsibility for everything people think about me.
The first one matters to me.
If I hurt someone, I want to know. If I was unnecessarily harsh, I can apologize. If my
delivery got in the way of what I was trying to say, I can own that too.
But the second?
I'm starting to think that's a job I could work at forever and never finish. Because I can explain myself perfectly and someone can still misunderstand me. I can have good intentions and still not be someone's cup of tea. I can clarify what I meant and they can decide they don't believe me.
And at some point, their version of me belongs to them.
Maybe that's the part I'm learning: I can care about how I show up without making it my job to manage how I exist in everybody else's mind.
Some people are going to be wrong about me. And maybe I can let them.

Notice
When you feel misunderstood, what is your first instinct—to explain, defend, apologize, or try to change the person's opinion of you?
Explore
Is there a difference between something you genuinely need to take responsibility for and an impression you're simply uncomfortable letting someone have?
Carry Forward
The next time you feel the urge to explain yourself one more time, ask: Is there something I need to make right, or am I trying to manage what this person thinks of me?
