Life has a way of beating us down. Between deadlines, responsibilities, the 24 hr “news”cycles and the unexpected twists we can rarely control, stress creeps in and settles like an elephant sitting on our shoulders. Although we can’t always eliminate the chaos around us, we can (and should) create space within ourselves to breathe, process, and find peace (that oh so elusive peace).  One of the simplest and most effective tools for this? Journaling.

Journaling isn’t about perfect handwriting or recording every detail of your day — it’s about giving yourself a safe space to release what’s on your mind. When stress builds up, your journal becomes a sanctuary where you can untangle thoughts, calm your nervous system, and bring yourself back to center.

Why Journaling Works for Stress Relief

It creates distance from your thoughts. When worries creep in your head and spin you around like a helicopter, they can feel very overwhelming. Writing them down allows you to step back and see them more clearly. Then, what once felt like a storm becomes a set of manageable pieces. It may not seem so bad.

It quiets the nervous system.Did you know that the mere act of writing slows you down? Yep, it does! Your breath steadies, your mind focuses, and your body begins to release tension. Don’t sleep on journaling.  It’s more than mental — it’s physical stress relief, too.

It builds resilience. Each and every time you write through a stressful moment, you strengthen your ability to process emotions instead of being consumed by them. Over time, your journal becomes living proof of how strong and capable you are that you can reflect on anytime you need to.

Simple Ways to Journal When You’re Stressed

If stress already has you feeling beat and battered, the last thing you need is another complicated task. Here are easy, gentle ways to get started:

  • The Brain Dump: Write down everything on your mind, uncensored. Get it out of your head and onto paper. Remember, abandon perfection. Just write.

  • One-Word Check-In: Describe how you feel in one word, then expand with a few sentences.

  • Gratitude List: Write three things you’re thankful for — even if they’re small, like your morning coffee or a kind smile.

  • Stress Scale: Rate your stress from 1–10 and note what’s contributing. Then write one small action that might lower it.

  • Letter to Yourself: Write as if you’re comforting a friend — except the friend is you.

Prompts to Guide Your Calm

Here are a few journaling prompts designed specifically to help you release stress and invite calm:

  1. What’s weighing on me right now that I can’t control — and how can I release it?

  2. What’s one small thing I can do today to support my peace of mind?

  3. What would I tell my past self who overcame challenges before?

  4. What does calm feel like in my body, and how can I invite more of it?

  5. If I could press pause, what would I choose to do with that quiet moment?

Finding Calm in the Chaos

Stress is part of being human, but it doesn’t have to define your days. Through journaling, you create a ritual of release — a way to let the noise spill out of your mind and onto the page, leaving room for clarity, calm, and resilience.

Your journal is always waiting, a quiet space where you can untangle the chaos and find your way back to yourself.

Happy Journaling

About Me

Hi, I'm Monique, the creator behind Positively Penned! For over 20 years, I've been learning how to live with anxiety - the hard way, the messy way, and eventually, in ways that actually help. I'm not a mental health professional, but I am someone who's collected a lot of tips, tools, and practices along this journey that have genuinely made a difference.

I created Positively Penned to share what I've learned with others who might be struggling with anxiety or self-worth issues - because if something helped me, maybe it can help you too. One of the biggest things that's helped me personally? Writing it out. Journaling, reflecting, and creating space to process everything. That's actually what led me to start designing and handcrafting notebooks and planners - I wanted beautiful, intentional tools that make the practice of journaling and self-reflection feel special and supportive.

My goal is to help you nurture your mental well-being and find balance, joy, and positivity in your daily life - whether that's through the blog posts I share here, the printables I create, or the handmade journals in my shop. Even on the hard days, especially on the hard days.

When I'm not designing or writing, you'll find me spending time with hubby & son, rocking out to music, or enjoying a cozy moment with a good book and my favorite tea.

Thanks for stopping by, hope to see you again soon...
